ABSTRACT
The Peninsula of Itapagipe, located in the city of Salvador, sheltered most of theindustries established in Bahia since the beginning of industrialization in Brazil untilthe creation of new industrial centers in the second half of the twentieth century. Thisregion has been occupied since before the establishment of the city by the Portuguese, with the presence of indigenous tabas. After the foundation of the city sheltered initiallybrickyards, corrals, shipyards, mills and alembics. In the nineteenth century, beforesetting up as an industrial region, was considered a salubrious area, propitious to theinstallation of equipment for treatments of diseases and building homes for vacation. This dissertation aims to study the industrial architectural heritage in Peninsula of Itapagipe and demonstrate the importance of both the region for industrialization as its specimens to the field of industrial architecture.
The temporal scope of this studycovers since the early nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century, when manycompanies began to leave the area. In this period various industries settled in Peninsulaof Itapagipe, of various sizes, and they brought along programs that go beyond theuse of fabrication, as storage sheds, model villages and buildings for the operationof modes of transport.
The establishment of industries in the peninsula was a factorthat greatly altered its character and its physical composition, since it brought issuesrelated to salubrity, housing density, due to the large amount of housing built to shelterthe workers of the factories, and composition of built space.
We highlight here theimportance of theoretical approach of the issues relating to industrial archeology and heritage, which are essential for defning the scope of work and understanding about the industrial architecture. Aiming to understand industrialization in the peninsula andmap the buildings used by companies related to the process of industrialization, wereworked on numerous documentations originated from archives, such as projects, photographs and documents, old books, especially the reports about the industry, and specifc references on the topic of industrial archeology and heritage, consisting of books, dissertations, theses and several texts in electronic support (as the topic is recent and has been developing significantly in the last decades, much of the materialis found on websites). From the field surveys it was possible to know the universe of the remnants of the industrial architecture of the Peninsula of Itapagipe and think thecriteria that would be suitable for the selection of these buildings for preservation
